Designed by James Kautz, a audio visual production specialist from the Missoula Technology Development Centre, and built by Mark Ackerman, University of Alberta Mechanical Engineering Department, for research into structure protection and firefighter safety at the International Crown Fire Modeling Experiment hosted by the Government of N.W.T at Fort Providence.

Camera has with stood temperatures of 1300°C for short time durations (less than 3 minutes) during the experiment.

FERIC has 3 units and the University of Alberta owns 2 units.

Video recorder uses Hi 8 camera with 120 minute tape.

Remote activation turns on camera.

The cover and the side insolation are made of ceramic material and covered by fire shelter material to prevent dust from the
outside of ceramic getting into the fire box to damage the camera . The fire shelter material is made by laminated fiberglass and aluminum. The camera box can swivel and tilt to set the camera direction. Ground attachment is important due to the high winds that accompany the passing of the fire front. The glass is double pane because a single glass pane is not enough to protect the camera from melting. The legs are held on with snap pins to speed up set up. Boxes can be made to suit whatever style of camera you intent to use . You should purchase your cameras first and than built your boxes to match.
