Background
The project goal is to Improve log deck protection against loss from fire. The term log deck is used here to include satellite log storage and mill storage of round wood or chips. Log deck protection can be divided into two themes: a) Preventing fires from encroaching into a log deck or starting within a log deck, and b) Suppressing fires through appropriate resources and log deck design.
Issues
- Log decks represent a concentrated fuel site, and suppression is very difficult once a fire becomes entrenched.
- Log deck fire suppression is not a responsibility of government agencies although they have, and likely will continue, to provide suppression support on deck fires.
- Satellite log decks are at risk of being run over by wildfires.
Objectives
- Conduct case studies to evaluate prevention and suppression techniques.
- Determine best practices for log deck design and suppression techniques.
- Investigate potential effects of fire fighting chemicals on pulping process.
