Log Deck Protection Demonstration

April 26, 2005   Vanderwell Contractors (1971) Ltd., Slave Lake, Alberta

Background: Remote log yards are an effective means to manage fibre delivery and maximize haul fleet utilization throughout the year. These yards often have limited infrastructure and may change location on a regular basis.  Effective fire suppression/prevention systems need to be considered as there is considerable risk involved. The same systems could also be applied to fibre storage areas at mills and may be shared among industries to increase effectiveness and reduce costs.

Issue:  Forest industries have the majority of responsibility to prevent and suppress log deck fires.  However, many in the forest industry are not aware of resources/contractors available to suppress deck fires.

In response, a one-day event was organized to demonstrate a variety of techniques and tools that could be used to prevent log deck ignition or suppress deck fires.  The list of vendors and demonstrations were:

Vendor: Wildfire  -  www.wildfire-equipment.com
