I was raised in Winnipeg, where I earned a diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology after high school. After working in manufacturing and sales for seven years I decided to go for a drastic career change and enter the forestry profession. I moved to Thunder Bay where I earned a diploma and an undergraduate degree in Forestry at Lakehead University. It was a great experience and included summer jobs in Northwestern Ontario, British Columbia's north coast, and north-central Saskatchewan.
Upon completing my undergrad degree I was offered a graduate research stipend to work in forest landscape ecology at the Ontario Forest Research Institute in Sault Ste. Marie. My research was a comparison of spatial vegetation patterns following clearcuts and fires within Ontario's managed boreal forest region. I completed my Master's degree in 2000 and stayed on at the Research Institute to work on a spatially based policy analysis project followed by work in boreal mixedwood ecology.
