Forest Technology Systems (FTS) Ltd. of Victoria, British Columbia ( http://www.ftsinc.com) will support the FERIC Wildland Fire Operations Research Group's activities in the Northwest Territories, including a study dealing with the effectiveness of fuel treatments for rural home protection.
Senior Researcher Dr. Marty Alexander recently approached Steve McBeath, Canadian Sales representative with FTS, about the loan of an FTS “Quick Deployment” weather station for the next three years starting with the 2004 field season. FTS considered the FERIC fire research activities a worthy cause and provided the station.
The FTS “QD” fire weather station records dry-bulb temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, and rainfall on a hourly basis. This information will be used by FERIC fire researchers in computing the fuel moisture codes and fire behavior indexes of the Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index (FWI) System in order to determine when experimental plots are “in prescription” for burning.
